Dispelling Common Acne Myths

Since so many people have acne and are doing just above anything under the sun (sometimes quite literally) to cure or treat their acne, there are quite a few myths that develop surrounding what methods are best to treat acne. It is very important to know which are true and which don’t carry much water at all. But arming yourself with this knowledge you will save yourself a lot of time and grief and be able to treat your acne faster and more effectively.

Myth number one is that if you eat a lot of chocolate in your diet that it will cause you to have bad break outs. This has been a myth on the books for quite some time, but actually, two in-depth studies done found that there was no correlation between eating chocolate and break outs of acne. Another myth is that if you eat a lot of pizza that it will make your acne a whole lot worse, when it reality no studies have been done that suggest this is true. As long as you consume pizza in moderation, you should be just fine.

A lot of people say that if you have a dirty face that you will break out with acne. Although the clogging of the pores does lead to acne, this myth is not necessarily true. You should though at all costs avoid getting dirt or wiping your hands on your face as it spreads bacteria and helps acne develop.

Some people think that when you become an adult, you no longer have to worry about getting acne. This however is completely untrue. Thousands of adults all over the world suffer from acne just like teenagers. And just like for teens, there are remedies and treatments as well.

Sitting in the sun as a way to cure acne is another bogus myth. The truth is that having too much exposure to the sun can lead to sun-cancer and premature aging. However, when you have lots of exposure to the sun you get lots of vitamin D, which promotes good skin. So there are benefits and down-sides to this one, but don’t try it as a way of combating acne, it won’t work.

Another popular myth is that drinking soda drinks like Pepsi or Coca-Cola will lead to break-outs. Studies have been done, and none of the results suggest that this myth is true in any way. A related cause may be that when most teens consume soda, they do so in fast food places where there is lots of grease that can clog pores and lead to break-outs, so it might just be a matter of the place, not the beverage.

Be sure to know what is true and what is false before treating your acne seriously. You want to use methods that have been substantiated and proven to be effective. Lotions, creams, antibiotics, and laser removal are all valid healthy ways of treating acne.
