Safety is no accident, especially when it comes to protecting your valuables during the holidays. Here are some tips that will help you protect what you prize:

• Be sure to lock all doors and windows before you leave home.

• If you have an alarm system, make sure you turn it on and use it.

• Consider installing a security cabinet. Some cabinets, feature a keyed security lock and a tamper-resistant, white-painted steel door. While the cabinets feature a rust-resistant painted steel body, they can be disguised with paint or wallpaper. They’re also easily installed and out of the way, whether in a closet, a laundry room or your home office.

• If you plan to be away overnight, use timers on your lighting fixtures and stop your mail and newspaper deliveries.

• Ask your neighbor to keep an eye on your home when you are going out of town.

• If you see any suspicious activity or individuals in your neighborhood, don’t be afraid to call the police department to check it out.

• Consider leaving a radio or television on when going out. The sound will give the impression that someone is home.
